In order to facilitate deeper relationships with my students, their families and to continue building the cultural community of artists in my classroom, I would like to collaborate, now that we are somewhat post- Covid, with other VAPA teachers to create a gallery-style arts showcase. I would like to coordinate a night of student artists welcoming the community to share in their lived experiences. Students may find inspiration from members within their communities while fostering appreciation and understanding of the art world by sharing and celebrating works of art. The cultural diversity that is multifaceted and honored is reflected in many types of art forms. Music, visual arts, poetry, and performing arts all celebrate exploration of self-expression that brings us together as one community. It gives students an opportunity to explore the arts, their identities and to feel a sense of belonging in celebrating the beauty in their differences. Having a night where art is showcased and student's are able to shine and recognized for their creative forms of self-expression would be a wonderful addition to building a sense of community. There could be interactive art activities, prizes, food and all the arts showcased in one main event with schools within the community and hosted at an art center here in Stockton.

The majority of our students face barriers that challenge their abilities to succeed. The goal is to provide students with an educational system that is free of all barriers that starts in each of our classrooms. "Barriers" means different things to different people, it is not a 'one size fits all' approach to education. The key is recognizing that barriers present themselves in many forms and providing adequate resources that address all the various issues that all students may be facing that prevent them from achieving academic success. Resources and support(s) and services put in place that address/assist with issues such as hunger, homelessness, mental health issues, after school programs and family counseling. I teach visual arts at Chavez high and is considered a Title 1 school. We have created a community of support services for our school. One of our biggest resources is a mental health facility that has professional counseling on-site for all of our students. Staff, administrators and students all contribute to our comfort closet that is available for all students in any time of need such as toiletries and clothes for students that may be facing hardships. In my classroom, my students not only know but feel that I care about them- they are valued and so are their experiences. One method of removing barriers in the visual arts is to use digital arts technology in the classroom. It gives equal access to virtually learn and create using a variety of materials that may be otherwise unavailable in a limited classroom such as sculpture and ceramics projects.
,The visual arts content standards mirrors college and career readiness/post-grad preparatory skills. The arts content standards focuses on creating, presenting, responding and connecting. Creativity is key for any future successful career endeavor but it is also the heart of any creative process. Solving artistic problems utilizes critical thinking skills. Collaboration and communication is also critical in the arts when analyzing a composition in an artwork and talking about art. By students developing their abilities, they are simultaneously strengthening their 21st-Century life skills too... they share a deep relationship.
The era of the digital age is upon us. Students use and are inundated with technology everyday. In order to ensure that students are deeply learning content within the curriculum at our schools it has to make sense and be relevant to them which includes the use of technology. In addition to tech, students need 21st-Century skills moving forward in their futures to ensure academic success now and be prepared to join the workforce in some capacity after high school. Whatever path they desire, whatever passion they are driven to follow, the incorporation of 21st-Century skills is essential to be successful. 21st-Century skills: Creating, Communicating, Critical Thinking and Collaboration are skills that should be included within each curriculum because they are life skills. If we want to have our students prepared academically and the "real world" post graduation, students need to begin practicing these skills. Creativity is essential for any job or future career path, it is not simply exclusive to the visual arts. Creative Thinking advocates problem solving and innovation, Collaboration is essential to working and networking within a team and Communication is an essential life skill to build and maintain healthy relationships of any kind. 21st-Century skills pave the way for students to be successful digital and future citizens in our culture.
